Porto has the world’s largest network of connected vehicles: More than 600 vehicles (buses, taxis and municipal service) are connected in a moving mesh network, enabling them to connect to each other (V2V) and to the infrastructure (V2I) by DSRC, and to the Internet. Besides, buses act as Wi-Fi hotspots, providing free Internet access to more than 200.000 daily riders. This is the result of a partnership between the Municipality, Porto Digital, the University of Porto and the company Veniam.
The main goal of Porto within SynchroniCity is to be better suited to co-create and provide new value-added services and applications, which increase the quality of life of the city inhabitants and visitors, the competitiveness of the local companies, the range of data-driven policy and decision making, the transparency levels and the organisational efficiency of the Municipality.
