The OpenLivingLab Days (OLLD) 2018, the annual summit of the European Network of Living Labs was held between August 22nd and 24th 2018 at the Centre international de conferences de Genève (CICG) in Geneva, Switzerland. This year’s edition, entitled “Living Labs & Sustainable Development Goals: From Theories to Practice” explored and debated the role of citizens, open innovation and the potential of Living Labs in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The event welcomed high level speakers from the United Nations, the European Union and local and regional governments to discuss policy developments. Moreover, 35 research and innovation papers on the topic of Living Lab development were presented to the participants. In parallel to the sessions and interactive workshops, the OLLD allowed discovering local innovation communities through local visits to CERN – IdeaSquare, Pangloss lab, SDG Solution Space, Impact Hub, Addict Lab, Hospital of Geneva and the Red Cross Museum.

During the event, U4IoT project organised a workshop dedicated to IoT large-scale pilots: “Optimising the learning curve – implementing end-user engagement tools in IoT large-scale pilots“. The workshop presented five real cases (smart cities, smart agriculture, wearable technologies, smart home care and autonomous driving vehicles) based on the large-scale pilot projects in combination with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Based on the cases, smaller groups shared experiences and brainstormed about an implementation process of the U4IoT tools and methods to enhance the end-user engagement in the piloting activities. The workshop resulted in concrete recommendations applicable to the real-life situation of each of the cases.

Overall, the OLLD event and especially the U4IoT session was an excellent opportunity to meet co-creation experts, and allowed the large-scale pilots to further shape their action plans for user-engagement in their respective project activities. U4IoT booth in the networking area provided information to the event participants about the U4IoT tools and services as well as the overall activities of the European IoT large-scale pilot programme.
